DHL Global Forwarding upholds its commitment to contribute and provide help to the community. Twenty employees from the Philippine company participated in a tree-planting activity at the Mts. Banahaw-San Cristobal Protected Landscape as part of Global Volunteer Day 2015, a global drive to restore and preserve the environment; and contribute to the development of the community by inculcating a passion for volunteerism among employees.
Stephen Ly, DHL Global Forwarding Philippines Managing Director, said: “Our employees are encouraged to join volunteer activities in living DPDHL’s commitment to giving back to the community and the company’s mission of accepting social responsibility. DHL Global Forwarding donated 630 seedlings and mobilized 20 employees who volunteered their Saturday morning, rolled up their sleeves and braved the steep and muddy mountain terrain plus the drizzling weather to plant native seedlings in support of biodiversity conservation.”
Haribon Foundation’s ROAD to 2020 program aims for the restoration of one million hectares of rainforests by year 2020 in order to help recover and conserve biodiversity; optimize benefits from reforestation such as cleaner air; a better ecosystem to support wildlife; and most of all, a sufficient supply of clean water for agriculture, industrial and household consumption. The program also makes available sufficient supply of seeds and wildlings to support all forest restoration efforts towards climate change mitigation, risk reduction of natural hazards, and enhanced options for sustainable livelihood. DHL Global Forwarding is in support of the program through its donations and employee participation in the tree planting activity.
Bianca Osorio, Partnership Development Officer, Constituency Development Department of Haribon Foundation said: “Being a non-profit organization, we rely heavily on the support of companies and individuals for the continuation of our programs and projects. With the help of DHL’s donations and the volunteers who planted the seedlings, we are a step closer to restoring our denuded Philippine forests.”
DHL believes that people are its greatest resource and the company aims to promote the spirit of volunteerism by encouraging employees to actively participate in community efforts, as well as inspire the spirit of volunteerism amongst their colleagues through the company’s Corporate Responsibility programs such as Go Green, Go Teach and Go Help.
DHL’s other corporate social responsibility activities in Philippines include construction of dwellings with Gawad Kalinga; tree planting in La Mesa Dam, Jala and Jala Rizal areas; coastal clean-up in Manila Bay, facilities clean-up; and storybook read-along at the Associacion de Damas de Filipinas orphanage. The employees are also active volunteers and participants in the Teach for Philippines partnership activities such as Read-Along; sorting and checking of examination papers; sports activities and sponsorships; partnering with Renovate to Educate for repairs of school classrooms, blackboards, chairs, tables and school facilities and structures.
Introduced in Asia Pacific in 2008, Volunteer Day has expanded into Americas, Middle East, Africa and Europe over the years, and continues to build on its success by involving more employees than ever before. In 2013, the initiative was rolled out as a year-long program and was a tremendous success, achieving the support of about 100,000 employees and over 3,000 customers and business partners in 127 countries and territories, who participated in about 1,600 community programs.
For Global Volunteer Day 2015, Deutsche Post DHL offices around the world are participating in many diverse community projects in support of various local causes. These programs deliver to the company’s three Corporate Responsibility programs – GoGreen (protecting the environment), GoHelp (delivering help) and GoTeach (improving educational opportunity and employability).
